We recognised a desire among young people to gain experience of working in the area of social development. The avenues open to them, however, were either desk jobs at NGOs or programs requiring a long-term commitment. The Spinning Wheel Internship Program was designed with the intention to provide young students the opportunity to live and work in rural settings. The objective of the internship is to provide an immersive leadership, education and social change experience. The intern lives in the village, teaches in the school and works with the youth and women of the school and community. This is as much an exercise for the intern to give to the community, as it is a journey of learning, unlearning, reflection and leadership.

Spinning Wheel Internship Program

SWIP is a month-long residential internship program for the university students from cities across India.Interns live and work in tribal villages in Rajasthan for a month that involves training students in life skills education and conducting participatory research to understand and report on local problems in the community. Over the last four years, we’ve had students from Delhi University, Nirma University, TISS etc. For the university students it is an immersive rural leadership program that becomes a unique experience of social work as well as self-growth through these new leadership experiences. For the schools, it brings both new energy and new insights into the training being given to students, and in facilitating the problem solving projects.

    Post Internship Programme

The interns’ learning journey does not end after they complete their stint in the villages. We offer a 3-year post-internship engagement for all our ex-interns aimed at building their capacity as young leaders and changemakers in their personal life and the social sector. This has two components:

    Group Workshops

Workshops, webinars and lectures on various aspects of leadership and capacity building, including systems and design thinking, problem solving, project design, strategic communication and various others.

    Individual Mentoring

Personalised sessions by SWLF senior team members and other relevant industry experts customised to the specific needs of the intern. This helps them map their strengths, weaknesses, needs and challenges, chart out plans and make connections to relevant resource persons as per their need.
